New Remote Monitoring Technology Helps Prevent Induced AC Corrosion

Pipeline operators can better track AC corrosion risk factors with the new Bullhorn® RM4210 remote monitoring unit from American Innovations

Austin, TX – November 24, 2015 – American Innovations (AI) has announced its Bullhorn RM4210 remote monitoring unit for AC and DC coupons. AI – a company that protects people and the environment with compliance solutions for the oil and gas industry – designed the RM4210 to help operators identify areas where AC may be a source of corrosion, ensure that AC mitigation systems are working correctly, and quickly know when AC current density conditions change so that mitigation systems can be adjusted.

As more pipelines are being located alongside high voltage power lines, the potential for induced AC corrosion is increasing. The RM4210 helps operators mitigate this risk by measuring AC and DC coupon current density, AC and DC pipe-to-soil, native pipe-to-soil, instant off, and PCR AC current. These measurements are automatically uploaded via satellite communication to Bullhorn Web, a web-based asset manager, so operators can use them to monitor and adjust their AC mitigation systems.

Bullhorn Web’s extract feature allows data from the RM4210 to be imported into PCS™ compliance management software. It also generates detailed reports that make it easy to identify problem areas, see current density trends, and prove that the mitigation systems are working efficiently. The same measurement data can easily be imported into PCS. Should conditions change, as they often do with high-voltage power lines, the RM4210 will send an immediate alert via email, text message, and/or Bullhorn Web.

Other benefits of the RM4210 include:

  • Form factor – The RM4210 is a fully integrated unit that can be easily mounted on top of a coupon test station. All components, including the antenna, are internal so it’s easier to transport and install, and it’s less likely to require a future visit to repair the damage.
  • Ease of installation and setup – Normal field installations take just a few minutes, and detailed configuration can be applied from the comfort of the office using the Bullhorn Web.
  • Accurate – The RM4210 measures AC and DC voltage with 1 percent of reading accuracy all the way through the range of auto calibration and auto-zero for every measurement.
  • Integrated with the TRITON® Coupon Test Station – Coupling the RM4210 with the award-winning TRITON coupon test station ensures unparalleled usability, durability, and ease of installation.

“The AC induced corrosion problem continues to grow, and we are pleased to offer an innovative solution that measures the severity of the problem, makes sure that mitigation is working properly, and ultimately helps keeps the pipeline and surrounding communities safe,” says American Innovations President Ed Kruft. “The RM4210 is one more in an extensive line of compliance solutions that helps our customers protect their oil and gas assets.”
